  • Omkareshwara Temple

    The temple was built in both Islamic and Gothic style of architecture by Lingarajendra in 1820. It is said Lingarajendra killed an honest and pious Brahmin to fulfill his political ambitions. That Brahmin became a Brahmarakshasa and started troubling the king. The king got rid of the so called Brahmarakshasa only when he brought a Shivalinga from Kashi and installed it after building a temple. The shivalinga was named as Omkareshwara and regular rituals were performed.

    Raja's Seat is one of the major tourist attractions in Madikeri. As per the legends, the Raja's Garden is one-time-favorites of Kings of Kodagu who used to watch the setting sun and spend time with their queens here. The structure is a small square in brick and mortar of four pillars bridged by arches, enhanced by beautiful garden, greenery, mountains covered with mist. The setting sun is a splendor to watch. There is also an attraction of the toy train for children.

Watching hundreds of Buddhist monks performing their daily religious rituals and offering prayers loudly is an exciting experience.

    This temple being the most important for the people in Coorg, was built in 1810 by King Lingarajendra and is located in Kakkabe near Virajpet. There is an annual festival during the month of March where all the coorgs gather and make special offerings and prayers called the 'Tulabhara' weighing oneself against fruits, sugar, coconuts, rice etc on a weighing scale.

    Cauvery Nisargadhama, a famous picnic spot for families is an island formed by the river Cauvery. This 35acre man-made island built in 1988 is filled with thick bamboo groves, sandalwood and teak trees. The island is accessible through a hanging rope bridge. There are deer, rabbits, peacocks, children's playground and orchidarium. Machans (tree top shelters) and pargola (wall less shelters), pedal boating, elephant riding and a deer park are the major attractions here.
